PYLOS!!! Princess of the South as many call...
The name of Pylos carry-in chronological order-three locations a) Pylos at Egliano hill (Nestor's Palace) b) Pylos in cape Korifasio and c) the present town was built in 1828 by the expedition of General Maison. The name of Pylos, according to Pausanias, comes from the founder of Pylos, son Klisonas from Megara.

The central square of Pylos is the Trion Navarhon square, the namesake monument was completed in 1933. Left and right are two cannons, one Venetian and one Turkish. In the South of the city and right of the road to Methoni, located the known Kamares, tunnels, remnants of the old aqueduct carrying water inside the castle. On the coastal road, next to the Town Hall is the two-storey neoclassical house of Olympian Kosti Tsiklitira, a legendary athlete. Recently renovated and have accommodated there, part of the collection of Philhellene Rene Puaux. Daily open except Mondays.
Niokastro, built on the rocks at the south entrance of the harbor, was built in 1572 by the Turks. It is one of the best preserved castles in Greece (renovated from 1982 to 1987), housed a museum of antiquities in order to rescue and maintenance of underwater archaeological finds from all over Greece. Visitors can admire the view and visit the Byzantine rhythm Church, Metamorfosis of Sotira. In the Acropolis of castle showing daily the representation of Battle of Navarino. In a stone building left of the entrance of the castle, known as barracks Maizona, going to transfer the Antonopouleion Museum, with exhibits from the Mycenaean, Archaic, Hellenistic and Roman times. South Niokastro is Saint Nicholas mount with the homonymous church. From there the view is breathtaking to the villages and Southern Aegean.
On the road from Chora to Pylos, 15 km from Pylos, on the Ano Englianos hill beside the road, resides King Nestora’s Palace with magnificent view over the Navarino bay and Voidokoilia. The buildings are divided into main apartments wine storehouses, pantries and the workrooms. Its magnificence made it equivalent to that of Mycenae. It is the best preserved Mycenaean palace and differs from the rest because it is not surrounded by cyclopean walls. Unfortunately not be visited because it is repaired.
North of Pylos is the worldwide famous for its natural beauty, Voidokoilia beach, among the finest in Greece. It is a beautiful bay with sand dunes, where at the top is Palaiocastro from which the view is breathtaking. Outside Palaiocastro, to the Voidokoilia bay is the cave of Nestor, where according to tradition stabling Nestor's oxen. Here also hid, according to legend, Hermes 50 oxen of Apollo. On the hill west of the bay Voidokoilia excavated in 1956-1958 vaulted Mycenaean tomb, the so-called Tomb of Thrasymedes son of King Nestor. North of Voidokoilia ascending toward the chapel of Prophet Elias, you can enjoy magnificent view towards the sea, Navarino bay, Yalova, Voidokoilia...
The Yalova lagoon Divari, north of Pylos between the village of Yalova and bay Voidokoilia interestingly both ecological and archaeological. The land area of 6000 acres is a major migratory bird station, the southernmost of Europe, a place where 275 species of birds. Here also hosted the turtle caretta-caretta and the African Chameleon. Near the lagoon there is a beautiful beach Ntivari or Gold Coast.
The Zoodoxos Pigis Pilgrimage (Virgin of Sgrapas) is 1km east of the upper Yalova. Here you can enjoy the panoramic view of the Navarino bay and the wetland. Nature lovers except Yalova can visit Polylimnio 20 km from Pylos on the road to Kalamata, a beautiful natural landscape with five lakes and five waterfalls. Also the Inousses (Sapienza, Schiza, Agia Marina) islets standing facing Methoni. Sapientza considered a monument of nature according to the International Convention NATURA 2000.
